A Message from Chef's Best Presenting Sponsor Walmart

Dear Food & Friends Supporters:

It is with great enthusiasm that Walmart serves as the Presenting Sponsor for Food & Friends’ 24th Annual Chef’s Best Dinner & Auction. Our partnership with Food & Friends started nearly a decade ago and continues to grow as a result of their commitment and proven impact on individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes, and other life-challenging illnesses.

Since its inception, Food & Friends has delivered a staggering 17 million fresh meals to over 25,000 clients throughout the greater Washington area. Annually, they serve 3,000 individuals and their families with healthy food and nutrition counseling. We encourage you to join the community of supporters who enables Food & Friends to deliver fresh meals, groceries, and hope to our neighbors who need it most.

Every day, across the country, people are struggling to put food on their tables. Walmart is in a unique position to make a major impact. In 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation launched "Fighting Hunger Together," a $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment to fight hunger in America. This initiative leverages Walmart's reach and resources to alleviate and elevate the issues of hunger and healthy eating at a national level.

As a community partner, Walmart is proud to create and sustain partnerships with organizations that go above and beyond to meet the community’s needs. In the words of Sam Walton, “We’re all working together; that’s the secret.”

Thank you so much for coming and have a wonderful evening!

Sincerely,
Nina Albert
Director of Community Affairs, Walmart

The Other Face of Hunger: A Closer Look at the Impact Illness has on the District’s Hungry

More often than not, when people think about food insecurity they assume that it is a result of an individual’s financial situation. This September, the USDA reported that an estimated 14.5 percent of American households were food insecure for at least some time during 2012. This means that 17.6 million American households lacked access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

Food & Friends will deliver more than 1 million meals this
year to children and adults living with critical illnesses.
While socio-economic status contributes greatly to the issue of food insecurity, there is another face of hunger contributing to the alarming statistics—individuals who, as result of an existing medical condition, are unable to access the food they need.

At Food & Friends, we know that food security, including specialized nutrition, is a key component in battling illness and managing the side effects of medications and harsh treatments. As a city that leads the country in AIDS cases per capita and also has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the country, it is crucial for those living with critical illness to have access to healthy food options. Even more alarming is the American Cancer Society’s assessment that approximately one-third of cancer deaths each year are related to factors such as poor nutrition and physical activity, and are possibly preventable.

To compound the health challenges that many face, full-service grocery stores are spread unevenly across the District and many Washingtonians live in "food deserts" with limited access to fresh produce and other nutritious staples. For those who are critically ill, it can be nearly impossible to obtain these resources making home-delivered service the only option. Food & Friends is the only organization in the region offering this service and is committed to providing hunger relief by eliminating complicated meal planning, exhaustive preparation and expense as a worry for clients.

To illuminate the need we face—over the past ten years, the demand for our services has grown by more than 45%. While 70% of our clients are living below the poverty line, it is important to note that regardless of their financial situation, 100% of our clients are served as a result of their illness and its impact on their health and access to nutritious meals.

Take, for example, Mary, who suffers from breast cancer and obesity. These illnesses make it very difficult for her to go grocery shopping and prepare her own meals. Because of her medical condition, it was determined that she would benefit from being on a diabetic meal plan. Simply put, the diabetic meal plan works to keep blood sugar levels under control, thus reducing the risk for heart disease and stroke. This meal plan is one of 11 that give clients access to the specialized nutrition needed to manage illness while easing the burden of daily living complicated by serious illness.

Approximately 30% of our clients receive the diabetic or heart-healthy meal plans. These meals, created by our chefs and registered dietitians, seek to provide tasty, healthy food that will improve client health outcomes:

Diabetic Meal Plan: The diabetic meal plan focuses primarily on whole grains, which are known to help reduce the impact excessive consumption of refined sugars can have on the body. It also focuses on fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Clients also receive nutrition education from registered dietitians on how to manage their diabetes, such as healthy snacking and the importance of portion control.

Heart-Healthy Meal Plan: This meal plan limits saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol by eliminating beef, pork, veal and cheeses in all meals. Limited desserts are also a focal point as well as packing in as many fruits and vegetables as possible.

Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation, 185,000 of these diabetic and heart-healthy meals are making their way into the homes of over 400 of our clients. While many people know the retail giant for their support of hunger relief, what many people do not know about is their commitment to providing healthier food that can help families live healthier lives. As a result of their support for our nutrition-based meals we have been able to make a significant impact in the community for more than 25 years. And, with continued support from organizations like these, we will able to ensure that healthy, nutritious meals make their way into the homes of all of our neighbors who need them most.

Water Deliveries Prepared Clients for Announced Water Outage

Yesterday, in response to Prince George’s County's planned water shutdown, we delivered 500 gallons of water to nearly 100 clients living in the affected area. We were thankful to learn that the crisis was averted but our clients would have been cared for regardless.

Yet again, thanks to incredible partners in the community – Walmart Stores in the Mid Atlantic Area and Capital Area Food Bank – we were able to respond to the special needs of our clients despite dramatically challenging conditions.

Specifically, Walmart generously donated an estimated 6,000 bottles of water. We greatly appreciate our partners’ spirit to serve and support the community every day and especially in times of need.

A few news agencies highlighted our efforts:
Thank you again to everyone who played a role in yesterday’s water deliveries and who help to make our services possible.

Innovative Strategies "Spring" Up to Support Our Work

Spring is here, and while that means more beautiful weather and blooms around the Washington area, it also means fewer donations for our area’s hungry. While the need is year-round, unfortunately the donations are not. Unlike the cherry blossoms, charitable donations bloom best in December. That’s why we rely on innovative fundraising campaigns and partnerships with generous foundations and corporate neighbors more than ever during the spring months.

One of our campaigns this spring was the 17th Annual Dining Out for Life® on Thursday, April 25th. Dining Out for Life® asks people to simply go out to lunch and/or dinner at more than 100 local restaurants which have committed to donate 25-110% of their proceeds to Food & Friends. With just a meal out, people across the D.C. region help us ensure that thousands of children and adults facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses receive the daily nutritious meals so vital to their care.

We are also working with many generous corporate partners around the region. Partners like Walmart, whose foundation recently awarded Food & Friends a $50,000 grant from their State Giving Program. Walmart is joining us again in May when we host our 23rd Annual Chef’s Best Dinner & Auction presented by the NACDS Foundation to celebrate Food & Friends’ 25th anniversary. The event will bring together many of our partners to help home-deliver more than one million nutritious meals to our critically ill neighbors.

We depend on the support of partners like Walmart to keep our programs vibrant throughout the year. The partnership between Walmart and Food & Friends stretches back to 2004, and we are looking forward to continuing it for years to come.

This partnership is a good example of an often overlooked effect of business on the community as a whole. Corporate giving is a major part of the donations that many local non-profits, including Food & Friends, need to serve the community year-round. When you consider the effect of major companies coming to our region, I would ask that we all consider the positive impact that these businesses have on local nonprofits. We thrive on the generous donations and fruitful partnerships that these businesses are able to provide.

At a time of the year when donations from our wonderful individual donors is less robust than the cherry blossoms, creative programs and partnerships with corporate neighbors enables Food & Friends to keep providing meals to those in need. These are the kinds of partnerships that our community needs.

Washington, DC– For millions of people throughout the country, Thanksgiving is a time for generous servings of stuffing, second helpings of mashed potatoes and a thick slice of pumpkin pie.

But for thousands of people in the DC Metro region, Thanksgiving is about more than a big meal. It’s about living to see another holiday and taking a short break from the daily struggle of living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other debilitating diseases.

This Thanksgiving, Food & Friends’ staff and hundreds of volunteers will prepare and deliver 3,500 complete holiday dinners to sick adults and children in the DC region. Each Thanksgiving delivery is designed to feed at least four people, giving clients a chance to host their loved ones. As part of the 3,500 meals, Food & Friends will also deliver turkeys and sides to 60 children and their families served by Health Services for Children with Special Needs Inc. (HSCSN). HSCSN provides innovative care to the pediatric Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and SSI-eligible populations of Washington, DC through a management network that coordinates health, social and education services for children and young adults living with disabilities and chronic illness.

“Our clients, as well as the children and young adults served by HSCSN, have chronic and complex medical issues which make it very difficult for them and their caretakers to cook regular meals, never mind a full Thanksgiving dinner,” says Craig Shniderman, Executive Director of Food & Friends. “These children and families must deal with serious issues every day, but we can make Thanksgiving a much better holiday. Setting some extra places at the table is our Thanksgiving tradition.”

Food & Friends depends on the support of the entire community to make Thanksgiving a reality for its clients and this year, Food & Friends is proud to recognize Walmart as the Presenting Sponsor of Thanksgiving festivities. Additional support is provided byKaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States, Macy’s Foundation, General Motors, Honest Tea and Zipcar.

“The reality is that even during the holidays, some of our neighbors are unable to celebrate in the most basic and necessary way – with a warm meal for their families,” said Alex Barron, Regional Manager at Walmart. “We at Walmart know that every parent, child and family deserves a nutritious meal and this Thanksgiving, we are proud to be part of Food & Friends’ long lasting commitment to deliver meals to local community members living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other diseases.”

Food & Friends begins preparing well in advance of Thanksgiving Day. Throughout the entire month of November thousands of pounds of food are purchased and prepped for the holiday. With the help of volunteers, more than 9,800 pounds of turkey, 1,050 pounds of roasted potatoes and 780 pounds of green beans will be prepared.

Thanksgiving at Food & Friends is made possible thanks to the generous support of Walmart, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States and Macy’s Foundation. In-kind support is provided by General Motors, Honest Tea and Zipcar.
